A hand-knitted item is a pleasant and most expensive gift, especially if it is a current warm sweater. Tying it is not difficult, the main thing is to carefully follow all the instructions.

Tell

Winter is a time of warm and cozy things that warm us even on the coldest days. Invariably knitted sweaters are a basic element of any person's wardrobe during the cold season.

In addition, in recent years, knitted items such as pullovers, cardigans, vests, ponchos, and tunics have become a fashionable and stylish wardrobe item. Every year, the most famous fashion houses release collections consisting of knitted sweaters. Therefore, it is not surprising that any fashionista or modern man wants to purchase this item of clothing. It’s even nicer when you can knit a sweater yourself, taking into account all the features of your body and, of course, your tastes and wishes.

In this article we will take a closer look at all the features of knitting a sweater for beginners. We’ll also look into simple sweater knitting lessons for beginners.

Knitting a sweater: preparatory work

Knitting is a complex and painstaking process, but in the end you get great pleasure from the act itself. Knitting a sweater for beginners is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. It is enough to clearly understand the sequence of knitting the product and take all the measurements correctly; in addition, it is important to prepare all the material necessary for knitting. Next, we’ll try to understand all the subtleties and nuances of preparation before starting to knit a sweater, a selection of sweater knitting patterns for beginners.

Selecting materials for knitting a sweater

First of all, before you start knitting a sweater, you need to choose the right material with which you will work.

  • Yarn is the main component of the future product, so be sure to take the choice of threads for your sweater seriously. The yarn can be any and its choice will depend on the model of the product, its seasonality, and taste preferences.
  • For summer light and openwork blouses, cotton or linen thread is ideal, because this item of clothing should be perfectly breathable and allow the body to breathe. These threads are usually thin.
  • If you decide to knit a sweater for colder and harsher weather, then opt for yarn that contains wool. After all, this piece of clothing should keep you warm. The yarn can be 100% wool, or it can only contain some pure wool thread. When choosing, you must remember that cashmere products are very finicky to wear and care for.
  • It is also important to pay attention to the choice of yarn color. For men's sweaters, more restrained colors of cool tones are suitable, while women's knitted cardigans or pullovers can be knitted with threads in delicate and bed colors, as well as with brighter and flashier ones. For children's blouses, you can buy yarn in bright and cheerful colors. There is also a huge amount of gradient yarn on sale now, which consists of several shades, which allows you to knit a rather original sweater.
  • The yarn must be selected according to the description in the sweater knitting pattern for beginners. Based on the example, you can choose according to your taste, the main thing is to adhere to the desired thickness and ratio of the size of the knitting needles.
  • To knit a sweater you will definitely need knitting needles. The quality of the knitted product will depend on the correctly selected knitting needles. The thickness of the knitting needles will primarily depend on the thickness of the yarn: usually, knitting needles need to be selected twice as thick as the thread. However, the choice of knitting needle thickness will also depend on the density of your knitting. If you knit very tightly, then you can choose thicker knitting needles; if your knitting is loose, then knitting needles that are a size smaller will do.
  • To knit a sweater you may need different knitting needles. Most often, regular straight knitting needles are used. They can be made of metal, bamboo, plastic. To knit raglan and collars, you may need circular knitting needles or stocking needles. This is necessary to avoid unnecessary seams.
  • In addition to the main knitting needles, you may need additional ones for tying braids on the fabric. You also need to stock up on a sewing needle, which will come in handy when assembling your sweater.

Taking measurements for knitting a sweater

It is very important to take all the necessary measurements correctly to obtain a sweater of your size. Based on the data obtained, you can subsequently create a pattern that will make knitting a sweater much easier.

  • To take measurements you will need a regular centimeter, a piece of paper and a pencil.
  • Also remember that when taking measurements for knitting a sweater, you need to pull the centimeter a little tighter, since such things stretch during wear.
  • Another rule for beginning needlewomen: when taking measurements, it is necessary to provide freedom of fit, i.e. add to the obtained figures from 6 to 15 cm, depending on the type of figure.
  • Chest circumference: Measured horizontally across the fullest part of the chest. When knitting a warm sweater, you can add 8 cm for a loose fit.
  • Waist circumference: a centimeter must be measured horizontally along the waist line.
  • Hip circumference: This measurement is taken along the upper thigh, approximately where the sweater or pullover ends. If you or the person for whom you are going to knit a sweater has a tummy, then the measurement should be carried out freely.
  • Shoulder length: This measurement is taken from the base of the neck to the beginning of the armhole in the middle of the shoulder itself.
  • Overall shoulder width: Using this measurement you can calculate your neck size. The overall width of the shoulders consists of three dimensions: the length of one shoulder, the neckline and the length of the second shoulder.
  • Length of the product: measured from the shoulder to the waist or to the end of the future product.

Based on all these measurements, a pattern is formed that will help you knit a beautiful and correct-sized sweater.

Choosing a sweater model

  • The model of sweaters is selected according to the structure of your body and, of course, according to your preferences and desires.
  • For cold winters, cardigans, pullovers, and oversized sweaters are suitable for the fair sex.
  • Cropped sweaters are very fashionable these days. as well as off-the-shoulder sweaters.
  • Men's sweaters have a more classic appearance. These can be pullovers with different necklines, as well as jumpers and vests.
  • Knitted children's sweaters are also very diverse. The choice of model will depend on the baby’s age and gender. You can easily knit an almost exact copy of an adult sweater for your child, or you can add cute and fun children's decor.

Selecting patterns for knitting a sweater

A wide variety of patterns can be used to knit a sweater, but the main ones are stockinette stitch, garter stitch, ribbed stitch and braids. Let's look at the knitting technique for these patterns.

  • Facial surface. To complete this pattern, you need to cast on the required number of loops. In the first row, you knit all the loops with knit stitches, and in the second row, purl them. Repeat this way until the end of the product. Usually this pattern is the basis for braids or other complex patterns on the canvas.
  • Garter stitch. This pattern is also often used for knitting sweaters. Cast on the required number of loops. The first row and all subsequent ones are knitted only with facial loops.

  • Harnesses and braids are the most popular sweater elements that can decorate any clothing. By alternating braids and stockinette stitch or garter stitch, you can create real masterpieces of handicraft. Let's give an example of the "Eight" pattern. Cast on the number of loops in multiples of 8 and add 2 edge loops. Rows 1,3,7,9 are knitted according to the following pattern - purl 2, knit 6, purl 2. Next, rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 are knitted according to the pattern, i.e. knit 2, purl 6, knit 2. In the fifth row, a crossing is made: purl 2, 3 loops are removed on an additional knitting needle, knit 3, then loops from the additional knitting needle are knitted, purl 2.
  • Rubber. This pattern is most often used for knitting the bottom of a sweater, sleeve elastic, and collars. There are a large number of variations of this pattern: elastic 1 by 1, 2 by 2, 3 by 3 and others.

  • From row 9 to 104 we knit according to the description, thereby forming the openwork pattern of your future sweater.
  • In the 105th row, it is necessary to close the loops in the middle of the row to form the neck of the sweater. To do this you need to bind off the middle 24 loops.
  • Then, in the subsequent rows 107, 109 and 111, on both sides of the closed loops, you also need to close 3 loops once and 2 loops once, forming a neckline.
  • Your loops are on two knitting needles, each with 19 knitting needles.
  • Row 113: cast off all stitches.

Knitting the front

  • The front of the sweater is knitted up to row 89 in the same way as the back. You start with an elastic band and then knit an openwork pattern.
  • In the 89th row, cast off the middle 20 stitches.
  • Then, in every second row, you need to close more on both sides of the closed loops - once 3 stitches, once 2 loops, twice 1 loop. This way you form the neckline of the front of the sweater.
  • As a result, you should have 19 loops left on each side of the neck.
  • Row 113: Cast off all sts on both needles.

Knitting the right sleeve

  • On needles No. 4.5 you need to cast on 35 loops.
  • Next, knit 21 rows with a simple 1*1 elastic band.
  • In the 22nd row, add 15 stitches evenly. This is usually done using yarn overs. You should have 51 stitches on your knitting needles.
  • Next, knit 60 rows as follows: knit 6 loops with stockinette stitch, then 39 loops with an openwork pattern according to the pattern, 6 loops with stockinette stitch.
  • On the stockinette stitch you need to add stitches evenly to widen the sleeves. This is done as follows: on each side of the openwork pattern in every eighth row 4 times 1 loop, then in each 4th row 5 times 1 loop.
  • You should have 69 stitches on your needles.
  • Row 61: cast off all stitches in the row.

Knitting the left sleeve

The left sleeve is knitted similarly to the right.

Assembling the sweater and finishing it

You may need a sewing needle to assemble the sweater. with which you will sew individual parts. First you need to make the shoulder seams and connect the front and back of the sweater using the side seams. Next, sew the sleeves into the armholes and stitch them together.

Knitting a collar:

  • The final touch to knitting a sweater is its finishing. You need to tie a beautiful braid, which then needs to be sewn to the neckline.
  • On knitting needles No. 4.5 you need to cast on 13 loops, which will serve as a repeat for the future pattern.
  • Next, knit a braid according to the pattern below. Here is a description of the repeat of this pattern.
  • 1st row of braid: purl 2, knit 9, purl 2.
  • 2nd row: knit according to the pattern.
  • 3rd row: purl 2 loops, slip 3 loops onto an additional knitting needle while working, knit 3 loops, knit 3 loops from an additional knitting needle, knit 3 loops, purl 2.

1. MODERN KNITTED ITEMS. STYLISH SWEATERS, PULLOVERS AND
JUMPERS FOR WOMEN

Handmade women's clothing, knitted taking into account the individual characteristics of the figure and having an interesting modern style, will always take its rightful place in your wardrobe. You can easily knit an elegant sweater with a collar, a fashionable brightly colored jumper, or a fitted pullover using knitting patterns using step-by-step descriptions of all stages of work. In this material you will find master classes on knitting stylish outerwear for women, as well as patterns and designs for sweaters, pullovers and jumpers both for the winter season and for the summer.

It is not always appropriate to knit a short, fitted sweater or a fashionable jacket, even if such a style is quite suitable for your body type. It is important that on cold winter days your lower back is completely covered and protected to prevent colds in important organs.

Knit a sweater or pullover to size. Too shapeless and baggy models should also be excluded from your wardrobe. For plump women with wide hips, we can advise you to knit a bright tunic jumper with a slightly fitted silhouette. Models of large size sweaters in neutral colors look interesting, and the bottom can be knitted in a contrasting bright color. If you are an experienced knitter, you don’t have to strictly adhere to
selected scheme. The pattern can be made more interesting and not stereotyped, the sleeves can also be modified - for example, knitting them a little wider, and embroidering flowers along the edges with bright threads.

For women whose figure resembles the shape of an apple, you can knit a stylish pullover with vertical stripes or a slightly fitted cardigan. But avoid chunky knit sweaters. Crewneck jumpers and tight-fitting sweaters or skinny cardigans are not suitable for you.

If you have an hourglass figure, you can knit a fitted sweater with a low neckline and large buttons. You can, but then wear a wide belt of the same color over it.

A universal jumper model for women (both overweight and thin) is a knitted polo jumper. The collar may have a short clasp or several buttons down to the chest line.

The most popular jumper pattern for obese women is the elongated tunic jumper. This is especially true if it is a little tighter than the bottom of the silhouette and is slightly fitted. A wide belt with a buckle will also be appropriate for a long knitted jumper.

Modern models of jumpers for women include the combination version, which is now in fashion, with a V-shaped (or round) neckline and a sewn-in top of the shirt with a collar.
